The USDA and CARD work throughout all ten of Armenia’s regions to establish efficient and economical water usage in irrigation systems and make farmers less reliant on mechanical pumps. Armenia is currently utilizing only about 1 billion cubic meters of its available water supply of about 8 billion cubic meters. During the Soviet Union era, an elaborate pump system was in place. Irrigation was effective but pumps were controlled by electricity from Russia. When Soviet control faded, a reliable power supply failed and the entire irrigation system collapsed.
