The region's highest and steepest industrial vineyard is being established
Maran is undertaking efforts to establish the region's highest and steepest industrial vineyard. The vineyard is planted by Maran Winery with the support of USAID funded “Rural Economic Development - New Economic Opportunities” program, executed by CARD foundation. It will be situated in the Artabuynk community, Vayots Dzor province, at 2050-2070 m above sea level and will be cultivated in accordance with the philosophy of organic technologies and biodiversity preservation. There are many challenges in the field, one of the most important of which is global warming. All calculations show that in the next 20-30 years the Ararat Valley will become an unsuitable area for quality viticulture, especially winemaking. Therefore, it seems only reasonable that the Armenian winemaking industry should start examing the potential of high altitude viticulture-winemaking and its sustainable long-term development. The research part of the project started at the beginning of the year, a plant nursery of native varieties was established.
